Friday, October 9 - Lecture on John Fante at Newport Coast Comm. Ctr. - 7:30 pm

OCICA cordially invites our members to a lecture by

Dr. Teresa Fiore, Associate Professor of Italian, California State University, Long Beach

John Fante at 100 - Writing and Fame in the Works of an Italian-Californian Writer

2009 marks the 100th anniversary of John Fante's birth. Born in Colorado, Fante (1909-1983) moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. Seen at once as a modernist chronicler of the city, a realist novelist with a regional slant, a confessional writer, and a Hollywood scenarist, Fante is remembered for incisively and ironically giving voice to the immigrant's plight and the compelling lure of literature. This lecture focuses on Fante's representation of the Italian experience in the Southwest and on the striking success of his works in Italy in the past decade. Clips from Giovanna Di Lello's video John Fante: Profilo di scrittore (2003) will be shown.
